Rotten Neighbors: Now There Is a Way To Find Out About Neighbors Before Moving In!

by Jared on October 10, 2007

I just came across a very cool website, www.RottenNeighbor.com.

Remember the last time you moved into a new house, apartment, condo, etc.? You checked it out a few times, fell in love with the place, were attracted to the neighborhood…and BIT the bullet! Then after you moved in, you became acutely aware of the “little things” that bothered you. You know, the neighbor’s dog that likes to bark at 2 am, the college kids that have keg parties on Tuesday nights, or the guy who runs an auto shop out of his front yard.

Well, RottenNeighbor.com is here to save the day. Before you move into a new house, you can research the neighborhood to see if there have been any reports of any disturbances, disruption, or plain rudeness. In fact, I did a quick search and found that someone posted a warning about a halfway house that the City put smack in the middle of a quiet, white picket fence neighborhood. This is definitely something I would like to know about before moving into that neighborhood…or for that matter, NOT move in!

Check out the website. You just type in your zip code, and a map will pop up. You can then see the “flagged” houses with comments. Very informative.

Right now the service is free, and they say that they will continue to make their money off advertising. Let’s hope it stays that way.

Here’s a little blurb from the Company:

“We are the first real estate search engine of its kind that helps you find bad neighbors before you move so you don’t regret the purchase of your new house, home, condo or apartment.

Our goal is to be an exceptionally smart assistant when you are looking to move into a new neighborhood. We hope that you will be able to find your dream home in your dream neighborhood by using our data and information provided by other users such as yourself. We then hope you will return the favor to other home buyers by adding to our database.

It doesn’t matter if you are moving down the street or all the way across the county, we are here to help you find and discover bad neighbors no matter where you are thinking about relocating. When you are going to make one of the biggest decisions in your life we are here to help you make a choice you won’t regret later when you might discover a bad neighbor living right next door. We show you detailed maps of states, counties, cities and neighborhoods all searchable by ZIP code.

We depend on users like you to submit bad neighbors to our maps. By doing so you will be adding to our real estate search engine and improving the home buying experience for thousands of people.

RottenNeighbor is also a tool for real estate agents to market their services and discover homes that they can feel more confident in showing knowing there are not bad neighbors nearby.”

Definitely use it! This is truly the age of the internet. 10 years ago, who would have thought of this? It’ll be even better when it picks up steam.

D, I’m sure that you won’t find any reports of rotten neighbors in your perfect neighborhood!

While all of this information is entertaining to read, it may not necessarily be precise. If neighbors are already at each others throats, what makes you think that they wouldn’t elaborate to make their rival neighbor seem evil?

Kelley, I definitely see your point. I guess this site is almost like Zillow.com…you can get a sense of what is going on, but should not take the information as “the word.”
